This course will be based on acquiring a thorough
knowledge of your sewing machine with an imaginative approach to the
creation of contemporary, innovative, samples. A basic machine that
will do zigzag stitches is required. If your machine has greater capabilities
and is equipped with computerized memory, etc., it will be just fine
for this course. The course will be focusing on the large variety of
effects that can be achieved through imagination, rather than through
the mechanical capabilities of machines.
Following are some of the skills you will
learn:
Dyeing of fabrics for embroidery
Sampling and experimentation with automatic stitches, zigzag stitches
and free machine embroidery
Appliqué techniques, using straightforward onlay, cutback appliqué using
two layers of fabric with automatic and free machine stitching
Creation of transparent effects by layering, fusing, appliqué (bonding)
Comprehensive notes will be provided to all enrolled students by the
Gail Harker Creative Studies Center
Quilting techniques using both automatic and free machine stitches
A variety of finished edges, to include machine made cords, tassels,
and traditional edges
Machine lace
You will create a collection of work showing a variety of inspirational
stitch samples and classroom notes which will provide a source
of inspiration from which to work for years to
come.
This is a City & Guilds of London course. Time will be allowed for
each student to complete the required collection of samples and notes that will
be used to assess your work for the award of the City & Guilds
Certificate. Finished samples are due at the Gail Harker Creative
Studies Center no later
than 15 June 2005, for certificate candidates.
All postage costs will be the responsibility of the student.
Please
note: There will be a small package of fabric and material supplied
at the class, for which there will be a $20 USD Lab Fee. You will also
receive a supply list of other materials you will need for the course.
The center has machines available for loan to students.
