Gardenias Class Name - Gardenias
The name, Gardenias, has nothing to do with the type of art and design
we will be creating. We have adopted the practice of identifying each
class by the name of a flower, which also helps to create a visual identity
for each class. This is not a universal City and Guilds practice, but
one which we like to use for Gail Harker City & Guilds Creative Studies
classes.
About this Intake
The number of sessions scheduled and the duration over which they are
offered is a reflection of the breadth and depth of the content this
course covers. Each class session is geared to the introduction of new
material. The program assumes that each student will complete assigned
work between sessions in order to stay abreast of the class. A percentage
of work to be accomplished for this course is completed in the classroom.
While the program is rigorous, those who successfully complete the program
to the required standard will be awarded the internationally recognized
City and Guilds Certificate of Unit Credit in Unit 1 - Design.
The Tutor
Gail Harker, LCGI, is a Canadian who resided for nearly 20 years in Britain,
until returning to the US in 1995. She moved to Britain in 1976 with
her American husband and family. She studied art in both Canada and
Scotland. She completed both Parts 1 and 2 of the City and Guilds
Design and Embroidery course with Distinction in both parts. She
was awarded the Senior Award of Licentiateship (LCGI) by the City
and Guilds Institute. Gail has previously been a teacher of several
City and Guilds Embroidery courses, and was, for several years, a
City and Guilds External Verifier for Embroidery and Patchwork & Quilting.
She was the Founder-Chairwoman of the Aylesbury Vale Embroiderers
Guild and served in that position for three years. She is a long
standing member of the Embroiderers Guild of Great Britain. She has
authored four books: Embroidery Skills: Machine Embroidery (published
internationally in five languages), Fairy Tale Quilts and Embroidery,
Christmas Stitches, and Tassel Making. She is a contributing author
to: Starting to Stitch Creatively (Batsford - London) wherein she
authored the section on Materials, and authored the Machine Embroidery
chapters
of
the Merehurst Book of Needlework. She has now completed her fifth book on embroidery,
Creative Machine Embroidery, published by Batsford of London. Gail is a highly
sought after instructor and lecturer with a full schedule of assignments.
The Syllabus
7922-01 Level 3 Unit of Credit Certificate - Design for Craft
The City & Guilds of London Institute course in design helps students
acquire a series of basic design skills. Candidates will create a portfolio
of design work based on the design elements of color, texture, line,
shape, and form. Throughout this work, candidates will use the design
principles of balance, rhythm, contrast dominance, harmony, scale,
and proportion. Learning to see may seem a bit basic, but seeing in
the art context is, singularly, the most important aspect to be learned
by the designer/craftsperson. We will learn to see the world around
us as a source for design development. The ability to process visual
information will forever change your view of the world, your art, and
your craft. You will discover that your art and craft are inseparable.

THE DESIGN COURSE The Design Course will consist of 8 sessions beginning
19 February 2005, continuing through the summer of 2006. The final session
could include
a public exhibition of student work. The sessions are spaced approximately
3 months apart over the time period. This allows students the time and
opportunity to develop and complete assignments made at each session.
The course is designed to take beginners to a level of competence where
they are able to use a variety of art media to express theme ideas in
a number of different ways. The course is Unit Credit for the City & Guilds
7922 Embroidery course. Some students prefer to take Design as an isolated
unit to use as an end in itself or apply it to other types of crafts
like: weaving, jewelry making, wood working, knitting, patchwork & quilting,
embroidery, etc.
