The first part of this course aims to help develop your powers of perception in order to enable the learning of drawing skills. It is for all those who long to be able to draw but are afraid to begin.

The program starts with experimentation on particular methods of learning to see perceptually. Thereafter, you will be able to record your observations in monochrome and color! To keep terrors at bay, you will remain with a simple still life group for the duration of the course. Once you have learned certain principles and practices of seeing and drawing, you will be able to transfer these skills to other subjects when you practice at home after the course.

Above all, the course is intended to be your first step in a lifetime’s adventure discovering the nature of color and tone. As John Ruskin said, “I would rather teach drawing that my pupils may learn to love nature, than to teach the looking at nature that they may learn to draw.”

The techniques learned with pencils and colored pencils confirm similar methods with watercolor paints. By using only reds, greens, and blues, you will be amazed by the sparkling effects and enormous variety of colors you can achieve by layering one over another. You are now petrified rather than merely terrified. For this reason, you will remain with the same subject matter throughout the course. Your hearts and minds will now become easy and comfortable as you assimilate new knowledge and develop your innate abilities.

By the end of the course, students will be ready to start drawing and painting at home. The practical work from the course will act as a diary of events and help develop your independent creativity.
